| | | | Creator: | Wattenmaker Advertising | | | | Dates: | 1930-1948 | | | | Abstract: | Wattenmaker Advertising evolved from a business enterprise founded by Jacob Wattenmaker (1894-1968), a Cleveland, Ohio, area businessman and philanthropist. Wattenmaker began his career as owner of a wholesale dry goods store in Cleveland in the 1920s. He then became merchandising manager of Bailey Co., a clothing store. In 1932 he founded his own chain of dress shops and was later named managing director of the Cleveland Fur Institute and Executive Secretary of the Cleveland Fashion Institute. He was a lecturer in merchandising, commerce, and public relations at several area schools, including Fenn College, Cleveland College, and John Carroll University. Subsequently, Wattenmaker opened a public relations and merchandising counseling office which evolved into Wattenmaker Advertising, Inc. after World War II. Wattenmaker Advertising specialized in food and real estate campaigns. Some of its larger campaigns were for the Northern Ohio Food Terminal, the Dry Cleaners Guild, and Zinner's, a flower shop. In 1965, Wattenmaker Advertising won the first Cleveland Advertising Club's Horace C. Treharne Medal for its campaign for the Sandusky Distributing Co. Following Jacob Wattenmaker's death in 1968, control of the company was given to his son, James. Crawford headed Thompson Products, Inc. (later TRW Inc.) as it moved from an automotive and aircraft parts manufacturer into the aviation and aerospace industries. A leader of Cleveland's philanthropic community, Crawford served on the boards of many cultural institutions. He was appointed to the Western Reserve Historical Society Board of Trustees in 1944 and later served as it's president. He was instrumental in the transfer of the Thompson Auto Album and Aviation Museum collection to WRHS in the 1960s, which became the nucleus of the Frederick C. Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum of WRHS. Crawford was married twice; to Audrey Cecelia Bowles in 1932, and to Kathleen M. Saxon in 1975. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Frederick C. Terry (1862-1926) was a business executive in the incandescent lamp industry with broad philanthropic interests related to World War I relief. Terry established the National Electric Lamp Association (NELA) with Burton G. Tremaine in 1901 in Cleveland, Ohio. Formed ostensibly as a consortium of small lamp makers in order to compete with industry giants such as General Electric and Westinghouse, NELA was found to be secretly and 75% financed by General Electric during a federal anti-trust suit in 1911. Terry served as vice president of GE and under his leadership Nela Park was built, one of the first campus-like research and production facilities in the United States. Terry's deep interest in World War I led to the establishment of the Nela Fund. Terry supported and corresponded with orphans and soldiers of the war, and acquired a large collection of posters, publications, and artifacts relating to the historical significance of World War I. The collection consists of an album containing photographs, drawings, programs, and memorabilia relating to the first to third annual conventions (1904-1906) of the national Electric Lamp Association, held respectively at Muskoka, Wisconsin; Montmorency Falls, Quebec, Canada; and Chautauqua, New York. | | | | Creator: | Cafarelli, Carmela | | | | Dates: | 1870-1979 | | | | Abstract: | Carmela Cafarelli (ca. 1880-1979) was an Italian-American opera star, founder of an opera company, and accomplished harpist from Cleveland, Ohio. Her father, Rocco Cafarelli, was a renowned Italian harpist who had immigrated to Cleveland in the 1880s, and was his daughter's earliest teacher. At the age of eight, she began study with master harpist Henry B. Fabiani in Cleveland. As a harpist, she toured the United States and abroad. She also became a solo harpist for the Cleveland Orchestra. Cafarelli studied voice with William Saal in Cleveland, and later attended the Conservatorie Santa Lucia and the Reale Accademia Filarmonica Romana in Italy, earning diplomas in both voice and harp. After her return to the United States in 1924, she undertook additional musical studies with Benjamino Gigli and Pietro Audisio of the New York Metropolitan Opera. In 1929, she returned to Cleveland, and in 1934, founded the Cafarelli Opera Company. This group toured throughout the United States and put on many charitable performances in Northeast Ohio. Cafarelli stopped performing in 1945, but continued to head her opera company and became a leading philanthropist and promoter of the arts in Cleveland. Bolton served on the committees of Indian Affairs (1940) and Foreign Affairs (1941-1968), participating in foreign aid hearings and conducting study trips abroad, including a trip to the Middle East in 1947 and one to Africa in 1955. She served as a congressional delegate to the United Nations Eighth General Assembly, and was involved with the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association and helped organize the Accokee Foundation to protect the Potomac shoreline across from Mount Vernon. Mrs. Bolton had a long-time interest in nursing and nursing education and provided funds to establish the nursing school at Western Reserve University, as well as founding the Payne Fund to assist a variety of educational and other charitable programs. The collection consists of transcripts of 16 interviews conducted with individuals who had known and worked with Frances Payne Bolton in her capacity as United States Representative from Ohio's 22nd District (1940-1968), as a member of the Republican Party, in her family and personal interests, or in her many philanthropic and advocacy endeavors. The interviews were conducted in 1989 by Leslie Anne Solotko as part of the project conducted at the Western Reserve Historical Society, Cleveland, Ohio, to process the papers of Congresswoman Frances Payne Bolton (MS 3943). Grants were originally given to institutions of learning, hospitals, and public charities in Ohio. After the death of Elizabeth Bingham Blossom in 1970, other family members maintained control of the foundation, and the focus of grantmaking changed to include organizations in the fields of the arts, sciences, education, and health and human services. Projects related to urban revitalization, adult psychological development, and nuclear issues were also undertaken. Environmental issues also took center stage in grants funding by the William Bingham Foundation. A majority of the collection contains materials related to grants administration, grant proposals, grant decisions, and grant reports. | | | | Creator: | Wade, Jeptha Home Family | | | | Dates: | 1860-1919 | | | | Abstract: | The Jeptha Home Wade family was a prominent nineteenth and early twentieth century Cleveland, Ohio, family with business interests in the telegraph and railroad industries, mining, manufacturing, and banking. Jeptha Homer Wade spent his early life as an apprentice to a tanner and as a carpenter. He next turned his interest to the emerging telegraph industry. In 1849, he organized the Cleveland and Cincinnati Telegraph Company. In 1857, Wade moved to Cleveland as the Western Union Telegraph Company's first general agent. His business interests were extensive in Cleveland, including the Cleveland Rolling Mill Company and the Citizens Savings and Loan Association. Randall Palmer Wade worked with his father in the telegraph business, moving with him to Cleveland in 1857. His business interests included the Cuyahoga Mining Company; the Citizens Savings and Loan Association; the Cleveland Banking Company; the American Sheet and Boiler Plate Company, and the Chicago and Atchison Bridge Company. Jeptha Homer Wade II also worked in the telegraph industry; he later joined the banking community in Cleveland. He was an active philanthropist, serving as a trustee of the Western Reserve Historical Society, Western Reserve University, Adelbert College, and the Cleveland Museum of Natural History. He was an incorporator of the Cleveland Museum of Art in 1913, and later established a purchasing fund for the Museum. The collection consists of one carte de visite album, with blue velvet binding, and six folders of loose photographs and plates relating to the Wade family of Cleveland, Ohio. In addition to Wade family members, individuals of the Garretson, Howe, and Stone families are also portrayed, along with friends of the Wade family. Its facilities were moved to Carnegie Avenue in 1908, and to its present site on Shaker Boulevard in 1927. After a brief merger with MetroHealth Medical Center in the early 1990s, it was sold to Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation and its Ohio partner, the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine in 1997. The non-profit proceeds of the sale were used to create the Saint Luke's Foundation. The hospital is currently owned by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Augustine Health System and the University Hospitals Health System. The collection consists of views of the construction of the addition to Saint Luke's Hospital at Shaker Boulevard. and East 116th Street, Cleveland, Ohio. The photographs were taken by R. E. Hawkins of Lakewood, Ohio, for the Hubbell and Benes Company, architects. She was active in Cleveland area civic, cultural, philanthropic, health, Jewish, and women's issues. Blumberg published her book Headstrong in 1982. In 1999, she married third husband Bernard Olshansky of Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, where she now resides. The collection consists of individual and group portraits of Rena Blumberg and individual and group portraits and views that include her parents, Ezra Z. and Sylvia Shapiro. Also included are individual and group portraits and views taken at the 1970 Cleveland Community Rally for Soviet Jewry, a 1934 group portrait taken at the dedication of the Hungarian Cultural Garden in Cleveland, and individual and group portraits and views taken at the City Club of Cleveland 75th anniversary in 1987.
